Hey Tony, You only need the regulated power expander if using lipos. If your using a123's keep it all simple either a EQ10, powersafe receiver, or dual Heavy Duty switchs into a 921, then decide matchboxs or programmable hitecs. Use what your comfortable with and have fun!

I agree about flyinggiants, read the a123 threads and learn how they should be charged and theory. Really cool batteries IMHO! Thanks!

Thanks man.  I have been doing alot of reading on the programmable HiTechs....I was going to go with HS7955TG's on all control surfaces anyway....seems like this would be the lightest setup with the least amount of components to fail....just seemed to simple to work...lol.

Does anyone know how to build a set of these packs out of the A123 batteries?

Gotcha...

I just saw on FG where people were buying Dewalt 36vdc tool batteries, and they had 10 A123 batteries in them.  They were taking them apart and using the batteries to make five packs for 100 bucks...so I got curious.

Thanks man!

John,

I see the new Triton has a LiFe option, what charger do you use?

That voltage drop off?  can you put a voltmeter before a flight and say "time to recharge" or does it drop so sudden it doesn't matter what the voltage was before?

Or do you just recharge it every 2, 3 flights ?

Sal, since I already have an older Triton, I just bought that little charger made by A123 Racing to charge the a123s.  It's about $50.  If the new Tritons can do LiFe than that's all you need.  You can check with Hank but I think you are correct - there is no way to accurately check remaining life in an A123 but you should be able to get basically the same number of flights as the same size NiCads.  And, you certainly can charge every few flights if it makes you feel better. (just remember to bring your charger to the field).

Also, when you order your receiver packs, make sure you get them with Futaba plugs.  A123 packs normally come with Dean's plugs and you will have to make an an adapter if you don't specify.

Here's a good article for building A123 packs...
I may try this at some point but not on the yak.. It certainly looks doable.
